God’s humor?

Posted in Uncategorized by joshuad on July 3, 2009

Someone recently asked for examples of God’s sense of humor, as according to scripture. (Personally, I always thought mirrors were the best examples…) I wrote back the following from the top of my head:

In my humble opinion…

Genesis 18 and 21: Sarah and Abraham getting it on at a very ripe old age. “There’s something I haven’t seen in a while!” Sarah herself laughed…

Numbers 22-24: God spoke out the mouth of the ass, and in one of my favorite (paraphrased) stories that Rich Mullins told, “still speaks out of the mouth of asses. So when God decides to use you, don’t think too much of yourself. By the same token, don’t be afraid of being used…”

All of Song of Solomon: “And all of your teeth are still there…” Is this really how God looks at us? Hmm…

Many of the Proverbs: “As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool returns to his folly…”

The story of Samson in Judges 13 to 16.

Many of the crazy prophets, such as in Ezekiel 4.

Mark 8:23-25. Spit and mud = miracle.

Matthew 22:41-46: No one could quote scripture out of context with more mischievery than Christ himself…

John 21: There are many sad/awkward overtones to the reappearance/challenge of Jesus to the disciples who’ve gone back to their old jobs.

Much of the imagery of Revelation is weird/amusing.

Throughout the Scripture, men respond to God in funny ways–David dancing in his underwear, or Zacchaeus climbing a tree, for example.

Agree? Disagree? Have other favorites?
